The first is women living with mental illness – many of whom have been rescued from the streets, referred by government hospitals, or brought by families who lack the resources to provide rehabilitation at home. The second is men with intellectual disabilities, including those with mental retardation, who need long-term structured support to develop independence and life skills.

We do not admit residents who require continuous intensive medical supervision – that level of care belongs in a hospital. What we offer is the next step: a safe, purposeful, relationship-centred environment in which recovery and rehabilitation can actually take root.

Admission follows government protocol. Every resident is admitted only after certification by the District Differently-Abled Welfare Officer, and a Certificate of Disability is mandatory. Together they form a way of life rather than a treatment plan.

Residential Care

CURE Illam is, above all, a home. Every resident has a sense of belonging here. Dedicated coordinators, wardens, nurses, and caregivers – some of whom live with residents as family – ensure the safety, security, and wellbeing of each person. The relationship between carer and resident is itself the foundation of our rehabilitation process.

Medical Care

A qualified nurse attends to day-to-day medical needs and administers psychiatric medication prescribed by government doctors. Residents are taken regularly to the District Government Hospital for check-ups, and doctors from the hospital visit CURE Illam once a month. Residents with chronic conditions requiring long-term care are supported throughout their stay.

Counselling

Residents receive counselling suited to their level of understanding – helping them make sense of their condition and build habits of self-care. Family members, who visit monthly, also receive counselling to support reintegration and to transform relationships through acceptance and understanding.

Vocational Therapy

We believe in the inherent capacity of every resident to learn, create, and contribute. Vocational training is integrated into rehabilitation, not added on as an afterthought. Residents choose from wire basket making, doormat weaving, flower pot crafting, earring making, tailoring, embroidery, sewing, and cooking. These skills build emotional and psychological independence, and prepare residents for employment and a livelihood after rehabilitation.

Occupational Therapy

Every resident has a role in the running of the home – cleaning, dishwashing, laundry, watering plants, helping in the kitchen, working in the garden and farm. When residents harvest the vegetables and flowers they have grown themselves, they experience something essential: a sense of achievement, of capacity, of belonging to something productive. This is not incidental to rehabilitation. It is central to it.

Spiritual Formation

Each day begins and ends with common prayer and yoga. The prayer is led by the residents themselves – reading from scripture, reciting prayers, singing devotional songs. It is, by all accounts, moving and quietly transformative. CURE Illam promotes interfaith dialogue and welcomes residents of all religious traditions.

Outreach Services

Our walls are not the limits of our care. CURE Illam’s outreach team reaches into schools, villages, and streets to serve mentally ill women, men, and children who cannot come to us.
